Texture Song Analysis

There are two songs I’m going to be analysing from a Textural stand point, these songs are “Open your Eyes” by Snow Patrol and  “Colour to Life” by Temples.

Open your Eyes

The song starts with the primary guitar strumming “The mindless chord”  G in crotchets and it just rides on that ad infinitum. The bass is the main melody keeper in the beginning as it is playing G C Em and back to C in crotchets. The vocals then come in loosely following the bass melody, and a few bars later, the bass drum appears playing quavers along to the melody. Synth and another kind of legato guitar melody is played underneath the main instruments, along with the drummer now playing the tom, this really helps build the song up to where it’s going later on. Later on in the song is when it really reaches the apex of it’s density. There are loud, stabbing guitar chords as well as tremolo picking

Colour to Life

Song starts with the primary texture, the guitar, playing 4 bars of the main melody.

Analysing Chord Progressions

Song 1: “Alright” – Supergrass

Key D Major – D, em, f#m, G, A, bm, C#o

Intro: D / / / |D / / / |D / / / |D / / / |

Verse Chords

D / / / |D / / / |D / / / |D / / / |

em7 / / / I em7 / / / ID / / / ID / / / I x2

————————————————————-

Bridge/Chorus

F#/ / / IF# / / / I F / / / IF / / / I

em7 / / / I em7 / / / IA / / / IA / / / I

Intro: 1///|1///|1///|1///|

Verse Chords:

1///|1///|1///|1///|

2(7)///|2(7)///|1///|1///|

bridge/Chorus

3(Minor)///|3(Minor)///|3(b)///|3(b)///|

2(7)///|2(7)///|5///|5///|

In the song “Alright”, there is a semitone of a change in the bridge/chorus from F(sharp major) to F, I feel this adds tension to an otherwise happy up beat song. The way the song rides the root on the keys in the beginning whilst the other instruments have other rhythms really is a unique for back then.

Song 2: “Old Man” Neil Young

Key D Major – D, em, f#m, G, A, bm, C#o

Intro

D / / / IF / / / IC / / /I / / G /I

D / / /IF / / /I C / / /IF / / /I

Verse 1

D / / / IF / / / IC / / /I G / / /I

D / / / IF / / / IC / / /I G / / /I

Chorus

Intro

1 / / /Ib3 / / /I b7 / / /Ib3 / / /I

Verse 1

Chorus

The chord changes are really nice and easy flowing. The atmosphere matches the lyrics in that way too I suppose, because they’re talking about an old man and how Neil is a lot like him.

Song 3 – ‘Just’ Radiohead

Introduction:

C / Eb / I D / F / I x3

Then we get the verse:

Am / / / I Ab / / / I Eb / F / I

Am / / / I Ab / / / I Eb / Bb / I

Am / / / I Ab / / / I G / Gb / I

F / / / I

Chorus

C / Gb / I F / / / I C / Gb / I F / / / I

C / Eb / I D / F / I C / Eb / I D / F / I

Key C Major – C, dm, em, F, G , Am, Bo

————————————————————-

Introduction:

1 / b3 / I b2 / 4 / I x3

Then we get the verse:

6 / / / I b6 / / / I 3(Major) / 4 / I

6 / / / I b6 / / / I 3(Major) / b7 / I

6 / / / I b6 / / / I 5 / b5 / I

4 / / / I

Chorus

1 / b6 / I 4 / / / I 1 / b6 / I 4 / / / I

1 / 3(Major) / I b2 / 4 / I 1 / 3(Major) / I b2 / 4 / I

The song is based around a bunch of semi tone changes, like the Am going into an Ab; it really gives the song an un easy feeling. The lyrical content gets behind all this as well as it seems to be about a relationship ending, really bad stuff!

Band 4 (Get Funked) Blog

Summary up until today.

I was absent for the first 2 weeks of practice, but my band mates all went ahead and learned all the parts. The first song learned was “Beggin'” by Frankie Valli. I then returned and quickly learned “Beggin'” and another song we were assigned, “I’m a Man” by Spencer Davies; As we kept on practicing as a band together, our culture grew stronger because of our appreciation for each other. When we started growing more comfortable in each others presence, we were learning the songs really quickly and started moving on to other songs: We chose “Scream (Funk my Life up)” by Paolo Nutini and “Sweet Home Alabama” Lynard Skynard. Paul was so happy with our speed and accuracy that he then assigned us another song of our choosing, so we decided on “Baggy Trousers” by Madness. Our setlist is up to scratch apart from Baggy Trousers.

2nd – 18th

We have had two Show and Tell performances and we were pretty stellar during both; there are just a few issues that need sorting out timing wise. When it got time to choosing a 5th song, we decided not to do Baggy Trousers and had a group vote that landed on “Hard to Handle” by Otis Redding because it is a nice and funky mover and groover, practice on it will begin on the 20th.

Work History

House Painter, 09/2015 to 10/2015
Mandy Ferguson – Millom, Cumbria
Mandy needed her house painting in Millom, so she called me and asked for the full outside with two coats of a
Tinted Shellac primer to try and cover some damage on the walls (Dampness) and then adding two coats of Dark
Angel paint on the outer walls. This took about 2 weeks from September into October and I did not stop until it was
perfect.

Room Painter, 10/2015 to 10/2015
Amber Griffiths – Barrow-In-Furness

My friend Amber wanted my services and I gladly obliged. We bought the paint together and got to work. She
wanted two walls painted Magnolia and the other two painted Vermillion Red. Together we stripped all of the wall
paper and filled in any holes in the wall with “Poly Filla”. It then so happened that part of her wall was falling apart

because of a hole. We took all of the broken wall away and had to buy some plaster board to replace it. We measured,

cut and nailed to pieces of plaster board in place of the broken wall, then filled in all the gaps with more “Poly Filla”.
With that finished, we started puing masking tape along the top of all the skirting boards and the ceiling and
started adding the base coat of Magnolia to all of the walls, we also needed to add a coat of ‘Damp’ paint to one of

the walls due to mold and dampness showing on the wall. When all of that dried, we added another coat of
Magnolia to the wall to strengthen the colour. Waited again and then started adding the Vermillion to the other two
walls; we used two coats. We finished with adding a last coat of Magnolia to the other two walls and it was
finished.

Task 7 – How to apply for a job

Curriculum Vitae – A Curriculum Vitae is the most popular form of job application as it is written by you and has all of your strengths and attributes to the best of your knowledge. You can make yourself look good with a CV because a it’s all about only looking good on paper, even if white lies are told, it is still based upon some kind of truth to the matter.

Applying in Person – Applying in person is another good way of doing it because they’re getting your (somewhat rehearsed) first impressions straight from your mouth instead of having to read over some paper. If you come across as enthusiastic and have passion for said job application, then they pretty much always go for it. It may be appropriate if you have one job you might really want and think you can do well, so you give your all into this interview in person.

Online Application – An online application is definitely the easiest way of doing it, because you can apply for many at the same time and depending on which ones say yes, you then have options as to which door you should walk through; it also helps if you have all of your information saved on your computer at your disposal. This may be appropriate for little jobs that you might just be doing for the money.

Dear Sir/Madame,

I am writing to let you know I would like to apply for the position of Painter as I am qualified in this field of work. I found out about this opportunity via your website http://www.hodgson-ltd.co.uk/ as I frequently visit it often in search for jobs doing with my house. If you would be so kind as to take me on, I can start straight away or whenever you want to interview me.

I am interested in this position because, as I previously stated, I am experienced in this field of work and would like to expand on my passion for painting. Your company attracted me with it’s professional outlook on Painting and decorating and it also has a very nice looking website that has a smart layout and is very easy to navigate; I feel like I could be a great part of the team.

My strengths on this subject Include:

  • Fast worker
  • Team player
  • Can paint a house (Outside) in 2 weeks by myself
  • Punctual
  • I am very reliable

These strengths, I think, would contribute greatly to your company and I would be a very diligent worker always ready to start new jobs as quickly as I finish previous ones. I can paint anything rather quickly as I don’t waste any time as there is always something could be doing whilst the paint dries! If put in a team, I am a very nice person to get along with and I can help people out whenever they need it. Lastly I am very reliable and I get results out of my finished jobs.

I am available for an interview any time for the next 3 weeks if you are interested in me. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing back from you!

Yours faithfully, Mark Kirby.
